The Inky Box Review

Don't forget to share!

Have you heard of The Inky Box? It’s a monthly subscription box specifically designs for current and aspiring lettering artists. Here’s my honest The Inky Box review to hopefully answer any questions you may have.

I signed up for The Inky Box back in June of 2018 specifically out of curiosity. I was seeing artists I followed on Instagram talking about it and seeing the cool tools they were getting out of their boxes made me sign up! In the Fall I ended up skipping a few boxes because I just didn’t have as much time to spend lettering, but I jumped back in at the first of the year!

What does it cost?

There are two different types of subscriptions, The Inky Box (full size) and The Inky Box Mini. The full size is $39.95 per month, but if you sign up for 3, 6 or 12 months at a time you get a bit of a price break.

The Inky Box Mini is $14.99 per month and also has a price break if you commit to multiple months. The mini is just what it sounds like, a miniature version of the full-size box. You’ll get a few of the products included in The Inky Box, in the mini.

What do you get in a box?

Each box is different (which is the exciting part!). You are guaranteed to get at least $40 worth of lettering supplies and cards in the full size and $15 worth in the mini. The supplies also come in a cute and personalized box that you can then use to store all of your products!

You also get coupon codes, practice sheets and exclusive video tutorials on how to use certain supplies included in the box. This was super helpful for me with the February subscription box because we had a new dip pen and nibs included. I have tried dip pen calligraphy but I am not great at it yet. The video tutorial explaining how to use it was very helpful!

Is it worth the price?

It is absolutely worth the price! You are guaranteed to get at least your monthly subscription fee cost in supplies (usually more than that) and you get to sample products before spending a lot of money on them. Lettering supplies can be expensive! I love that The Inky Box gives me 2-3 different markers or pens in a few colors to try out each month. Then if I absolutely love the pen I can go out and buy a full set. I’m not worrying about whether or not I’ll hate it and wasting money on supplies I won’t use.

The Inky Box also sends more than just markers and pens! They also send paper pads (like my favorite Rhodia pads), pencils for drawing, ink, watercolor supplies, and cards by other lettering artists in the community. I’ve even gotten little canvases and wood boards for use with acrylic pens or other paint mediums.

So to recap, yes the price is absolutely worth it! Especially if you are trying to grow your lettering supplies AND learn new techniques.

Are the supplies different each month?

Yep. I’m on my 6th box and I haven’t gotten a single duplicate item! If I had gotten a duplicate pen, odds are it would be a different color than what was sent previously. You can check out what the past months’ boxes have included on the What’s Inside tab. You can see that there really are very few repeats.

If you are curious and want to get a mystery grab bag of past box supplies, you can do so for $15.
